| Adult Basic Education (ABE) |
|
The Adult Education Program offers classes in the core academic subjects of reading, writing, and math for the purpose of preparing for the GED exam, college entrance, or improving employability.
All students are assessed using the Test of Basic Education (TABE) to determine a functioning level in Reading, Language, and/or Math. This assessment score is used to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and ensure that you are placed in the appropriate class for instruction. At the Adult Education Center, students will be advised prior to taking classes. The classes are structured similar to those of college classes. Instruction is provided, but students are expected to work outside of class and may get help from the tutoring center. Courses run for seven weeks - a "semester segment." At the end of semester segment, students will be advised and obtain a new class schedule. Progress is based on "content mastery," which means that students will demonstrate that information has been learned before progressing to another course. We expect a grade of "B" (80) or better before advancing you to a more challenging class. Classes in Victoria are offered in the mornings and evenings. Class schedule varies each semester segment. Specific class available dependent upon available funding. Some classes are available in the surrounding communities. This program also offers the opportunity for "Distance Learning" which is studying course materials through videos, dvds, workbooks, and online learning.
