Adult Basic Education courses at Victoria College cover basic academic subjects to help adult students improve their skills in preparation to take the GED and reach a college ready level. Obtaining a GED and enhancing basic skills helps ensure working adults are able to remain in the workforce and improves individual earning potential.
These classes are offered four times a year with each session lasting seven weeks. There is also a distance learning option which allows students to complete coursework using the Internet from home on their own time or working out of paper-based products.
Services are also offered at satellite locations, including Cuero, Edna, Hallettsville, Port Lavaca, Refugio, Yoakum and Yorktown.
After applying for the Adult Basic Education program, students will need to take the Test of Basic Education (TABE) to determine eligibility, skill level, and placement in classes. Classes include core academic subjects such as reading, writing and math.
English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are also available for non-native speakers who need to become proficient enough in English to pass state and citizenship exams and continue on with their education. The ESL program is offered twice a year and lasts 14 weeks. After applying for program entry, students will need to be assessed with the Basic English Skills Test (BEST) to determine eligibility, skill level, and placement in classes. Classes include instruction to improve oral and reading comprehension and communicating through speaking and writing.
The Adult Education Center offers a free GED Official Practice Test (OPT) that helps determine readiness for the GED exam. The center also offers the SAIL program which combines adult basic education with skills training in certified nurse aide, truck driving, and welding.
