Victoria College employees have access to various applications for creating professional documents, presentations, videos, etc.

pdf Instructional Technology & Software Resources at VC (PDF)

Workshops are available from CAPE and/or VC staff; others are provided by vendors or online resources. Contact CAPE to learn more about specific applications, best practices for incorporating e-learning tools in face-to-face and online courses, and web and electronic instructional material accessibility.

Additional resources for faculty and staff may be found on the Pirate Portal. Log in to Pirate Portal and navigate to Employee Resources > Forms & Resources > CAPE.

Office 2013

If you need assistance with navigating the new look of Office 2013, Microsoft provides some excellent Office 2013 Quick Start Guides. These guides are six-page, downloadable PDFs on applications such as Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.

Technology Services recently pushed out Microsoft Office 2013 to all faculty and staff computers.

  • The installation uninstalled Office 2010 and deleted the shortcut icons off of your desktop if you had any.  If you have any Microsoft Office 2010 icons pinned to the bottom of your desktop, it did not remove them. You need to unpin those by right clicking on them and choosing Unpin this program from the taskbar. If you click on any of these 2010 icons, it will try to reinstall and you need to hit cancel and then unpin the programs from the taskbar. 
  • To access the new Office 2013 programs, go to Start > All Programs and they will be listed under Microsoft Office 2013. If you want a desktop shortcut for any of the programs, right click on the program you want and choose Send To-Desktop.
  • If you use TurningPoint, you will also need to update it to 5.3.1 from your Software Center.
  • If you have any issues or questions regarding installation, please call the Help Desk at X2509.

Adobe Acrobat Pro XI

Adobe offers various Quick Start Guides for Acrobat Pro XI. Adobe also offers Learn Adobe Acrobat XI video tutorials on their Adobe TV channel.

Blackboard is our Learning Management System (LMS) at Victoria College. We currently use Blackboard 9.1, SP 14 . Guidance on using Bb at VC is located on Pirate Portal > Faculty Resources > Distance Education Resources.

Vicotria College is commited to providing access for all individuals. When creating materials that will be distributed electronically via Blackboard, VC's website, Pirate Portal or email, please use best practices for creating accessible electronic instructional materials (documents, spreadsheets, presentations, web, multimedia, etc.). In the event that a document is only going to print or a presentation is only going to be used face-to-face, still follow these best practices as much as possible so that you won't have to remediate materials later. Remember, it's always easier to create accessible materials than try to fix inaccessible ones. Adding proper structure to documents creates ease for editing/reformatting or transferring to other formats as well as navigation.

Recording Studio & Panopto

CAPE offers a recording studio for faculty who would like to record Panopto lectures. The studio is also open during CAPE extended hours.

If you would like to schedule time to use the studio, please be sure to reserve the studio in advance by contacting Karen Duffie at CAPE.

If you are new to Panopto or need a refresher, please contact Alex Suchon or Jeremy Gould to get started. New users will need to have an account and folder set up on Panopto before being able to record.

The State of Texas Academic Resource Link (STARLINK) offers professional development for higher education faculty via webinars and short teaching tips. CAPE hosts webinars periodically, so check out our Upcoming CAPE Workshops & Calendar page.

  • Individual STARLINK memberships are available to members of registered institutions, such as VC. If you aren't available at the times CAPE offers STARLINK webinars or want to check out their extensive archived webinar library of over 100 topics, contact CAPE for information on how to register for a free membership.
  • STARLINK also offers STARLINK Professional Development YouTube Channel for short videos.

VC uses TurningPoint 5.  Since not everyone uses TurningPoint, Technology Services did not automatically update all computers with the newest version. Please be advised that once Office 2013 is installed, you will need to update TurningPoint to 5.3.1 from your Software Center.

  1. Be sure to close ALL Office and Adobe applications before starting your installation.
  2. For best results, be sure to install Office 2013 first.
  3. To open your Software Center, click on the Start button, type "software center" in the search blank and click on the Software Center icon.
  4. The Software Center will then open showing the software available for installation.
  5. Click on the desired application and click install.
  6. Restart your computer once installations are complete.
  7. If you have any issues or questions, please call the Help Desk at X2509.
  • Turning Technologies offer a wide variety of training documents, user guides, tutorial videos, instructor-led online classes, and self-paced training as well as technical support via chat, email and phone. Visit Turning Technologies Training page.
  • TurningPoint training materials are available on CAPE's Pirate Portal area. If you have any questions about how TurningPoint is integrated with Blackboard at VC or how to use it in the classrooms, please contact CAPE.
