What's Your Story?

Meet Rita!

Hi. My name is Joy Sixtos. Since graduating high school as part of the top 10% of my class, I've had the privilege of attending Victoria College for the past couple of years. I am proud to say that this May of 2007, I will be graduating VC with both an Associates of Arts degree and an Associates of Science degree. I've also begun courses at the University of Houston-Victoria in pursuit of attaining a Bachelors of Business Administration and hopefully a Masters degree. One day I'd like to own my own business.

I choose to earn my undergraduate degrees at VC because of the wonderful atmosphere and academic instruction that is available. The campus is beautiful, and the courses are intriguing. The VC campus is also a convenient location for those students such as me who commute from out of town.

If I had to do it all again, I'd still choose VC. Basically, the motto says it all: Start here. Go far! Thanks VC for making my future a success.

I'd also like to add that my mother will be completing her CDA in May of 2007, and my brother is taking duel-credit ITV courses as a high school junior. This is the first time my mom has ever gone to college, and my brother is also enjoying the journey. My brother also plans to attend VC once he graduates high school. Two generations, three family members attending VC! Unique, historic and quite an accomplishment!

photo-paulben.gifMy name is Paul Benavides II, and I come from a very small community of Lolita, TX. I graduated from Industrial High School in 2003 and was not sure what I wanted to pursue in life after graduation. After a year and a half of taking basics at Victoria College, I gained an interest in the chemical industries. Growing up just 10 miles from a few major plants were also key factors in pursuing this degree. Now that I am nearing the completion of my degree, I feel that I have a better knowledge of how these plants operate and what goes into running a clean and safe operation. I also gained a new respect for the active process technicians and what they go through in their everyday duties. This Process Technology degree will now give me the opportunity to pursue a good paying job and to enjoy life.

photo-mattj.gifI grew up in a small town, Weimar. I have attended Blinn College, TSTC in Waco, and now Victoria College. I would have to say that my VC experience has to be the best. I know a lot of people that have been through Process Technology, and they got me interested because it seems like a good paying job and there are a lot of benefits and options of where I can work.

gaylehardcastlephoto.gifMy story starts with being a stay home Mother. I took a few Victoria College evening classes because my pastor was teaching Bible literature and I loved the atmosphere and the challenge of learning I found at VC. My husband encouraged me to enroll and take a few regular day classes and I did.

I was so nervous attending the first class because I was older than most college students. However, to my amazement the younger students sought me out to study with and to work with on group projects. I found that my life experiences helped me even though I was 20 years removed from the classroom experience.

My oldest daughter, Shana Hardcastle Donnan, graduated from high school and started at Victoria College the next year. We graduated side by side. During the ceremony, we were whispering and she said, Mother, they just called your name to stand up as an honor graduate. My family told me later they were so proud of me.

I married at 16 years and had promised my father that I would go on to college so I was proud to take him the invitation to my graduation. He passed away one month later.

I was offered a job at the VC/UHV Library in September of 1986 and have worked here for 20 years this year. Victoria College is a wonderful place to attend and work.
