Hands-on activities, children’s camp launch museum space exploration exhibit

“3-2-1 Blast Off!” might sound like a rocket’s countdown, but at the Museum of the Coastal Bend, it’s a day of hands-on workshop activities launching the opening of the Museum’s new exhibit, “Above Texas Skies: Space Exploration in the Coastal Bend.”

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 7 at the museum, located on Victoria College’s Main Campus.

From 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m., participants can explore space topics through activities such as making mini alka-seltzer–fueled rockets, building model lunar landers and creating paintings of the starry Texas sky.

At 12:15 p.m., attendees can watch a series of model rocket launches on campus. The rockets will be built during a two-hour workshop at the museum, beginning at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. To register for the $20 workshop, call (361) 582-2559 by Monday, March 2.

“Fascinating things in space history and science have happened right here in our area,” said Isabel Van Dyke, curator of education & public programs at the museum. “We’re excited to recognize those contributions from people in the Coastal Bend and to inspire the next generation of explorers.”

The “Above Texas Skies” exhibit runs March 5-Aug. 5. Visitors can see objects from the space race, the first private space launch and a more than three-billion-year-old moon rock on loan from NASA.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the museum will host a Spring Break Space Camp for students in grades 3-5 from 7:45 a.m.-noon March 9-13. The cost is $50 and includes all activity materials and a daily snack.

Each day will have a different theme, such as “living in space” and “space vehicles.” Students attending the camp will:

  •     Design & build a model space station
  •     Launch two different types of rockets
  •     Explore what makes a good space food
  •     Do astronaut exercises
  •     Create a space journal
