VC tennis team takes first place in bronze division at USTA Campus Championship

VC tennis team takes first place in bronze division at USTA Campus Championship

In a surprise upset at the United States Tennis Association’s Campus Championship—Texas Sectionals in Austin last month, the little tennis team that could from The Victoria College won first place in the bronze division.

The tennis team was awarded $800 from the United States Tennis Association to help cover travel costs so they could compete in the Campus Championship.  Team captain Luis Pina learned about the availability of grant funding from the USTA when he applied for the VC team’s UTSA membership.

The tournament began with a match that placed the VC team in the bronze division.  Once in their bracket, the VC team played against two different teams from Texas State University, the team from Sam Houston State University and the team from Texas Christian University, and won their division in mixed doubles along with men’s singles and women’s singles matches.

That win has earned the team the opportunity to play in the UTSA National Campus Championship in Surprise, AZ in mid-April.
