SGA sponsors Crossroads Town Hall meeting

The Victoria College Student Government Association will sponsor a town hall meeting for public discussion of the Texas Sunset Commission’s review of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The Crossroads Town Hall meeting will be held in the VC Student Center on Monday, September 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. Speakers include Sunset Review Commission Chair, Senator Glenn Hegar, former TCEQ Commissioner Larry Soward and attorney and TCEQ water permit expert Adam Friedman. Following the speakers, open public discussion is encouraged.

The Sunset Advisory Commission is an independent state agency whose purpose is to review and assess the need to retain state agencies. Through their review process they look to eliminate government waste and duplication of programs. The commission may also consider changes to improve agency operations.

As part of the review process, the commission seeks input from the public, along with conducting their own analysis and consideration of the agency’s own self-evaluation.

“The SGA is sponsoring this public forum because we want to promote student involvement in state and local government issues,” said Kathryn Wilson, former SGA vice president. “We want to support smart decision-making in the voting process, and to that end, encourage our fellow students to find out more about state government processes as they affect our community.”

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality completed a self-evaluation last October. That report may be found at http://www.tceq.state.tx.us/agency/sunset/index.html.

The mission of the TCEQ is to protect the State’s natural resources and ensure that human health is consistent with sustainable economic development, including enacting and enforcing state regulations that promote and protect clean air, clean water and the safe management of waste throughout the State of Texas.

The Sunset Advisory Commission will present its recommendations regarding TCEQ to the 82nd Texas Legislature in 2011.
