VC honor society students help collect eWaste

Victoria College honor society students helped the City of Victoria dispose of old, unwanted electronics as part of eWaste Day.

For the past several years, the City of Victoria has arranged a special Electronic Waste (eWaste) collection day for Victoria residents.

This special collection day is free for area residents in part because it is sponsored by an outside company and does not pose any added expense to the City. This year, the City’s eWaste Day was sponsored by Bass Computers based in Houston.

In the past, eWaste collection has occurred in conjunction with the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. But for the past two years, eWaste has had a day all to itself. The City intends to continue conducting a yearly eWaste Day into the future.

As a service to fellow students, faculty and staff at Victoria College, VC’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society students agreed to help make eWaste collection easy on campus and encourage proper recycling.

Throughout the prior week students and faculty members collected old computers, computer peripherals, televisions, cell phones and other electronic items on campus. Then they loaded it all up and hauled it to the City’s eWaste collection site at the Victoria Community Center.

“We collected probably 150 cubic feet of eWaste,” said Phi Theta Kappa faculty sponsor, Dr. Anita Brunsting. “The back of my car was absolutely crammed with old computers, monitors, you name it.”

Some old computers and peripherals can be refurbished by Bass Computers and may be reused in whole or in part. Other items, such as televisions or VCRs, will be broken down so that the metal may be recycled and the parts containing hazardous waste may be disposed of properly. All of the eWaste collected during eWaste Day was taken out of Victoria by Bass Computers.

Despite coinciding with one of Victoria’s recent rainy weekends, approximately 1,300 vehicles dropped off eWaste during the special collection.
