VC Pirates women’s volleyball team supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Upcoming game is fundraiser for former teammate currently battling disease

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink is the theme for the upcoming Victoria College Pirates women’s volleyball game against St. Philip’s College on Thursday, October 28 at 7 p.m.

The women’s volleyball team is not only dedicating their game to supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month, they’re also dedicating all the proceeds from admission and concessions to helping former teammate Megan Diaz, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last June.

Diaz, who just turned 20, said she found a lump in her breast and consulted with two different doctors.

“They both said it was nothing,” said Diaz.

Even though breast cancer does not run in her family, she continued to seek medical advice and finally, she had an ultrasound and a mammogram. Shortly after that, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and began chemotherapy. She is scheduled to have surgery in December and will begin radiation treatment after that.

In the meantime, while she does not still play volleyball, she does continue to work on her Associate of Applied Science degree at VC. After finishing at VC, she plans to transfer and work toward a bachelor’s degree in business, then open her own business as a freelance photographer.

In the meantime, her former teammates are supporting her fight and encourage everyone who attends Thursday’s game to wear pink. There will also be t-shirts for sale and donations will be accepted.

Diaz, who still keeps in touch with her former teammates and head volleyball coach Josh Moore, hasn’t been to any home volleyball games so far this season, but said she thinks she will be able to attend next Thursday.
