VCs Zeta Gamma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society earns a 4-star rating

Member students of Victoria College’s Zeta Gamma chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society recently earned national recognition from PTK’s Center for Excellence when they received a four star rating.

The rating is based on the chapter’s service and leadership activities including a presentation at the Texas Leadership Conference, participation in a charity book drive, an e-Waste collection day and attendance at the 2010 International Convention.

Also included is the VC chapter’s flagship student support project—the T.E.S.T. Workshop—where PTK members help their fellow VC students succeed by helping them prepare for mid-term and final exams each semester.

Additionally, VC’s Zeta Gamma chapter is conducting an on-going Hispanic Oral History project.

“This is the first time in three years that VC’s Zeta Gamma chapter has earned a starred rating from PTK’s Center for Excellence,” said chapter advisor Matt Wiley.

The four star rating elevates VC’s chapter into the upper half of all Texas PTK chapters.

“The student’s this year have worked hard to earn this recognition,” said Wiley, “and the support of VC’s faculty, staff and community donors for their efforts has been invaluable.”

To build on this success, the students are moving forward to present a poster on the Hispanic Oral History project at the 2011 International Convention.

The students are also celebrating winning several Texas Regional awards:

·         Honors in Action Award Participation - for the Hispanic Oral History and T.E.S.T. Workshops

·         Communications Award of Merit

·         Four Star Awards

·         Phi Theta Kappa Pinnacle Award

Each of these regional awards is shared with various other Texas chapters.

Participating VC faculty advisors include:

e-Waste & Induction: Dr. Anita Brunsting, co-advisor
T.E.S.T. & Induction: Dr. Margaret Janowski-Bell, co-advisor
Hispanic Oral History project: Dr. Karen Hagan, consultant
Travel advisor and PTK Faculty Scholar: Matt Wiley, co-advisor
