VC Writer’s Club hosts visiting authors

UTPA professor Stephen Schneider and celebrated artist Reefka Schneider, authors of Borderlines: Drawing Border Lives

Victoria College’s Writers Club is set to host visiting authors Stephen Schneider and his wife, artist Reefka Schneider, on Wednesday, April 13 at 1 p.m. in the media room at the Museum of the Coastal Bend. This literary event is free and open to the public.

The Schneiders will give a reading and presentation regarding their book, Borderlines: Drawing Border Lives, which is an artistic collaboration that unites his written contributions and her art together in images and stories that unfold in a series of bilingual poems and drawings. These stories portray the people of the Rio Grande Valley border region and bring to life their rich and unique culture.

Using this distinctively artistic and integrative approach to storytelling, Steven and Reefka Schneider make an important contribution to understanding the region they describe. On an even deeper level, the fusion of poetry and art in their book also brings prominence to the tradition of writings about works of art.

Steven P. Schneider is a professor in the Department of English at the University of Texas-Pan American, where he also serves as Director of New Programs and Special Projects for the College of Arts and Humanities. His wife Reefka Schneider is one of the foremost artists of “la frontera,” the binational region of the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. Her artwork reflects the social and economic realities of the border while celebrating the local culture, people, and music.
