Students learn more when they are engaged in their education. Active learning is an approach to instruction in which students are dynamic participants in their education as they gain, retain, and enhance their knowledge, understanding, and abilities. At Victoria College, we promote an educational environment where faculty and staff create a framework and where students are prepared and actively participate in order to improve student success.

Learner-Centered Teaching
Active learning and student engagement that involves students are called learner-centered. Maryellen Weimer proposes in her book "Learner-Centered Teaching" five characteristics of learner-centered teaching (Weimer, 2012). Learner-centered teaching:

1. Engages students in the work of learning.
2. Involves teaching the skills to master a discipline.
3. Encourages students to reflect on what and how they are learning.
4. Motivates students.
5. Encourages collaboration.
