Museum of the Coastal Bend names its first distinguished fellow

Charles Spurlins speaks the recent Civil War in Texas Conference

The Museum of the Coastal Bend, on campus at Victoria College, is pleased to announce its first “Distinguished Fellow of the Museum of the Coastal Bend,” Charles Spurlin.

The museum’s Distinguished Fellow was established to recognize outstanding service and efforts towards preserving the history and heritage of the Texas Coastal Bend.

“The museum’s advisory board vote was unanimously in favor of recognizing Spurlin as its first Distinguished Fellow,” said MCB Director Sue Prudhomme.

“Charles Spurlin is a logical choice for selection as Distinguished Fellow of the Museum of the Coastal Bend,” said VC History Professor Michael Hummel. “He actively promoted the creation of the museum and served as a founding member of the museum’s advisory board.”

A ceremony to confer his designation took place in October, during activities in conjunction with the recent Civil War conference hosted by the VC/UHV Library.

Spurlin, who is also a Professor Emeritus at VC, was presented with a certificate and a walking stick hand-crafted by museum volunteer Bill Birmingham, which incorporated mementos of Spurlin’s participation in past and on-going research into the Texas coastal bend.

“Charles continues to be a valuable resource for the museum’s exhibits. He energetically promoted the museum’s collaboration with the Korean War Conference in 2010 and the Civil War Conference last month,” added Hummel.

“Charles’ contributions toward preserving history in this area have been absolutely invaluable,” said VC President Tom Butler. “Not only did he serve as one of VC’s most beloved history professors for many years, touching lives and inspiring countless VC graduates, he has also provided us with a chronicle of VC’s history that now serves as the definitive historical resource on this college.”
