White Oak Trio to perform at Victoria College

The White Oak Trio: L to R - Martha Lisle, Meryl Ettelson, Steven McMillan

Victoria College’s Music Department will host a concert of chamber music on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. in VC’s Johnson Symposium. The White Oak Trio, featuring Meryl Ettelson on piano, Steven McMillan on violin, and Martha Lisle on cello, will perform works by Anton Rejcha and Sergei Rachmaninov. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $10 for VC employees and students.

McMillan frequently performs in his role as Victoria Symphony Orchestra concertmaster.  McMillan and Ettelson have been performing in recitals together for over three decades. After working together on a chamber music project which included cellist Lisle, the three teamed up in 2005. By late 2006, the trio began  making their first public appearances as the White Oak Trio.

Over the past six seasons together, the trio has received critical acclaim for their work in live concerts, CDs, radio broadcasts, and videos.

The White Oak Trio’s concert presentations are exceptional not only for the high quality of musicianship, but also because they integrate their audiences into their performances. Throughout their concerts, the Trio often shares with the audience about composers and their works, and the challenges of bringing music into the concert venue.

“It is this dialog from the stage that makes audiences feel as if they have had a deeply satisfying conversation,” said Dr. Marylynn Fletcher, professor of music at VC.

Upcoming projects include a documentary film about the trio by writer/director Sharon Ferranti due to be released later this year. Additionally, a studio recording release of the concert performed in Victoria, concerts throughout the United States and Europe, and a concert tour of the People’s Republic of China is also in the works.
