VC Choir, Victoria Civic Chorus to perform Jenkins’ “Requiem”

Dr. Martha Fabrique

Victoria College’s Choir and the Victoria Civic Chorus are performing “Requiem” by Karl Jenkins at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church at 4102 N. Ben Jordan at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Mar 30. Under the direction of Marylynn Fletcher, the 50 voice chorus will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra.

In this amazing piece, composer Karl Jenkins places five Japanese haiku poems between the traditional Latin texts of the Requiem mass. The haiku poems include performances by shakuhachi flautist Martha Fabrique. Fabrique is a world-recognized performer and scholar of the Japanese shakuhachi, a bamboo flute. She gave performances and lectures at the World Shakuhachi Festival in 2008 in Sydney, Australia. Her shakuhachi instructors include Yoshio Kurahashi, Stan Kakudo, and David Wheeler.  Fabrique will give a short demonstration of the shakuhachi at the concert.

Admission is $5 and is open to the public. Tickets may be purchased from any chorus member, at the office at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church or at the door.
