Animal behavior expert and autism self-advocate to speak at VC Lyceum

Temple Grandin

Victoria College will feature Temple Grandin as its fifth and final speaker of the 2011-2012 Lyceum Lecture series on Thursday, Apr. 5 at 7 p.m. in the VISD Fine Arts Center.

Grandin is not only a world-renowned animal behavior scientist, she is also autistic. She is an advocate and spokesperson on her own behalf and that of the millions of others with autism. Overcoming the significant challenges of autism makes her an exceptional example of how to turn a disability into an asset. It also makes her accomplishments that much more remarkable.

Grandin’s interactive presentation will cover autism and autism advocacy, along with animal behavior.

Because autism is not well understood and because the symptoms and the effects of autism vary so greatly from person to person, demonstrating how it affects those who suffer from the condition is a rare achievement. In her autobiography, “The Way I See It,” Grandin talks about how difficult it was to grow up with autism, but also relates how she overcame her limitations.

In fact, what initially seemed like a liability became Grandin’s asset when she discovered that her autism helped her understand animal behavior in a way that most people cannot. This led to her career as a professor of animal science at Colorado State University. Her visual perception of the world is similar to the way animals see it, and because of that, she has the unique ability to present truly innovative solutions to animal handlers in the livestock industry.

In addition to writing books on both autism and animal behavior, Grandin has won many awards in her life including a “Proggy” in 2004 from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. In 2010 she was named to Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world, in the category of “Heroes.” Grandin was also the subject of an award-winning HBO film starring Claire Danes.

Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
