VC Pirates basketball and volleyball teams join new club sports league

The VC Pirates women's basketball team is now a member of the Texas Collegiate Club Sports League.

The Victoria College Pirates’ sports teams—including men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s volleyball—are now members of the newly created Texas Collegiate Club Sports League.

For the past eight years, VC Pirates sports teams have been affiliated with the South Texas Club Sports League. The STCSL was dissolved at the end of last season after most of its member colleges left as a result of administrative issues.

Last summer, VC’s Men’s Basketball Coach Jonathan Anderson, along with Volleyball Coach Josh Moore and VC’s Physical Education Department Chair Bill Byers, called together coaches and staff from other two-year college sports organizations to create a new club sports league.

The new league includes the VC Pirates teams along with teams from a number of the Alamo Colleges in San Antonio and Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde.

“Being part of a league is important because it provides the competitive structure that our teams need to advance to playoffs and work toward winning championship titles against peer teams from other two-year colleges,” said Moore.

Joining member colleges stipulated that the new league had to have a new name and provisions were added to avoid future administrative problems, including requirements for financial transparency and that the league director may not be a coach from a member team.

Currently, Byers is serving as the interim director of the league.

“Bill agreed to serve as interim director so that we can continue to offer club sports involvement at VC,” said Moore. “League play is important and it keeps our students motivated along with maintaining their GPA to remain eligible to play."

VC Pirates’ team members also receive class credit for their participation and have the opportunity to earn scholarships.
