TEXASgenuine.org makes career exploration easier for Texans

A new online resource is available to help Texans explore college and career options.

TEXASgenuine.org makes it easy for students to find information on potential careers and the related education and training offered at public community colleges and technical schools throughout the state. The website is a major component of a statewide campaign to inform students and the general public about Career and Technical Education in Texas.

What is Career and Technical Education?

Career and Technical Education is a series of courses—combined with hands-on training—that prepares students for their chosen careers. CTE programs usually lead to a certificate or associate degree, and credit hours earned can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree for students who decide to transfer to a university.

Popular CTE programs lead to careers in industrial trades, such as instrumentation, electronics technology, welding and process technology, as well as health careers, including vocational and professional nursing, medical laboratory technology and respiratory care.

Why TEXASgenuine?

The TEXASgenuine campaign emphasizes that all Career and Technical Education offered at public colleges in Texas is… TEXASgenuine.

“Not just a career. A TEXASgenuine career.” That’s one of several slogans featured in the TEXASgenuine campaign. But what does TEXASgenuine really mean for Texans?

“CTE instructors are committed to providing the best training, relating real-world experiences and sharing their invaluable knowledge—a proven equation that leads to successful futures for college graduates,” said Darin Kazmir, Director of Marketing and Communications at Victoria College. “TEXASgenuine training opens doors for people in Texas who want to improve their lives and become truly successful in their chosen fields.”

But CTE programs benefit more than the students who enroll in them.

“CTE programs are also focused on meeting the needs of business and industry,” added Kazmir. “TEXASgenuine also means Career and Technical Education supports local, regional and statewide economic growth by providing business and industry with well-trained and knowledgeable workers.”

Career exploration made easy

For the first time, Texans can find all CTE programs, careers and public colleges on one easy-to-use website. TEXASgenuine.org is designed to make it easy for anyone to search for a career, learn about CTE programs and explore community colleges and technical schools. The website also links directly to the application for admissions and financial aid information for each college.

Additionally, many of the programs feature one-minute videos in which students who are enrolled in a CTE program talk about why they chose that program and what types of training are involved.

“The videos are especially useful for someone who isn’t sure which career to pursue,” said Kazmir. “They are great resources for students who want to get a feel for the kinds of things they’ll be learning in specific programs.”

Funding for the TEXASgenuine CTE Project was provided through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board with Discretionary Leadership funds received from the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006.

Victoria College is featured on the TEXASgenuine website as one of many Texas community colleges offering a wide variety of quality Career & Technical Education options that lead to in-demand career opportunities.
