Victoria College offers bacterial meningitis clinic

Victoria College is hosting a bacterial meningitis clinic on Wednesday and Thursday on campus.

Bacterial meningitis vaccinations will be given from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Academic Building, Room 108 on campus both days. The vaccinations are offered by Vaxanation of Houston, according to VC Registrar Missy Klimitchek.

The cost of the shots is $120, and Vaxanation will take insurance such as Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna and CVS/Caremark. However, that cost could be waived for those students in financial need, Klimitchek said.

The meningitis vaccinations are also available to VC faculty and staff as well as Crossroads residents.

All first-time students, and those who did not attend Victoria College during the fall semester, who are under the age of 30, are required to have the bacterial meningitis vaccination. Students will not be able to register until proof of vaccination is on file in the Office of Admissions & Records.

Klimitchek said 12 flu shots will also be made available on a first come, first served basis.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious, potentially deadly disease that can progress extremely fast. It strikes some 3,000 Americans annually, including 100-125 on college campuses, leading to 5-15 deaths among college students every year.  It is an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The bacteria that cause meningitis can also infect the blood.
