Student Success Workshops continue through spring

Helping students get ahead academically is the goal of student success workshops at Victoria College, scheduled this month through April.

Upcoming workshop topics include Degree Planning, Note Taking, Resumes 101, Conquering Math Anxiety, Extreme Makeover: GPA Edition, and Setting and Achieving Your Goals. The workshops are free and last about one hour.

Kim Smith, director of Title V, said the well-attended workshops began in spring 2011 and are held every semester.

“It’s something every student can benefit from, especially workshops like Time Management, a great one to attend when the semester begins,” Smith said. “Students have said this is very valuable information.”

Darin Luna, a freshman nursing student, enjoyed the time management workshop.

“I thought I was managing my time, but she (Smith) gave me some awesome tips,” Luna said. She told us how many hours there are in a week, and I found that I had 20 hours where I’m not doing anything.”

The mother of three said she wished the informative workshop had lasted longer.

“The information is so helpful on how to be a better student,” Luna said. “She gave us tips on studying that made a lot of sense to me. I took an exam right after the workshop, and if I had studied the way she advised, I wouldn’t have had so much trouble on the test.”

Luna said she plans to attend more of the workshops and recommends that other VC students do the same.

Smith said she would like to add more workshops and perhaps conduct them in the VC Student Center during lunch or other times when it is more heavily populated.

Similar workshops will be held on the VISD high school campuses through the Title V College Access Resource and Success Centers.

“This will prepare students for their success once they get here,” Smith said.

Evening workshops are also an option.

“I would be glad to do a workshop for anyone who asks,” Smith said.

She said the Time Management workshop topic allows her to offer tips on other subjects, such as studying and the importance of balance in students' lives.

“If students have a good time management plan, they are better organized, work smarter-not harder, get more sleep, and enjoy overall better health,” she said.

Students taking this workshop are asked to do a self-assessment and answer questions such as: “Do I miss deadlines?” “Do I seem to spend all day on the phone or Internet?” “Do I socialize too much?” “Do I go to too many meetings?”

Based on answers they give, students can determine if a time management plan would be helpful for them.

The next workshop, Degree Planning, will be held from 10-11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12 in Room 100 of the Academic Building on the VC Main Campus.

The workshops are held through Title V, which is fully funded by the Department of Education.
