Victoria College Kids College offers fun learning activities in summer

Children taking part in the Boom! Pop! Fizz! Weird Science class in 2012 learned a thing or two about chemical reactions

Crossroads area youth will have an opportunity to launch a rocket, explore mysteries, solve a crime, learn a sport and much more as part of the Victoria College’s Kids College. The summer classes run June 3 through August 2 at VC’s Main Campus.

The courses, descriptions, locations and costs are:

Grades 4 - 6

It’s Not Just Rocket Science! - $95
8 a.m.-noon, June 3-6 in the VC Continuing Education Center, Room 100
How do you lift a friend with just one finger?  It’s not magic … it’s just science!  You will discover that space dust is literally in your back yard and you will learn how to find it.  Launch a rocket and explore the solar system in this fun, hands-on adventure that goes beyond the ordinary.  Learn how to create fun, award winning science fair projects that are fueled by your own powerful imagination.

Boom! Pop! Fizz! Weird Science! - $95
1-5 p.m., June 3-6 in the VC Continuing Education Center, Room 100
Discover how the Earth and human body react to change.  We’ll explore everything from earthquakes to volcanoes and geysers.  What makes the human body both weird and wonderful?  Squeamish shrieks, and squeals are the order of the day as we learn how to create fake wounds that will scare others!  Explore the science of the Earth, various bodily functions and the thrill of chemical reactions that go Boom! Pop! Fizz!

Explore the Magical World of Art! - $95
9 a.m. – Noon, June 10-13 in the VC Continuing Education Center, Room 100
Express your creative side.  Explore the wonderful world of art in this class using various mediums and techniques including painting with color and pen, basic perspective, complimentary colors and face and expressions.

Buried “Treasure”: Archaeology! - $95
8 a.m.-noon, July 1-3 in the Museum of the Coastal Bend
Explore the mysteries of people from the past.  Join the Museum of the Coastal Bend to discover the science of archaeology and learn how we know about peoples’ lives hundreds or thousands of years ago. What can you learn from broken pots? Use weapons more ancient than even a bow and arrow. What can garbage tell us? Experiment to figure out the best ways to clean artifacts and find out how we can dig up our past.

CSI for Kids - $95
9 a.m.–noon, July 15-18 in the VC Continuing Education Center, Room 204 
Be a Crime Scene Investigator on the case.  Holly Jedlicka of the Victoria Police Department Crime Scene Unit will guide students to solve an imaginary crime from clues left at the scene. Students will play the role of a Crime Scene Technician and perform fingerprinting, sketching, measuring the scene, photographs, and securing the scene techniques.

Exploring New Lands - $95
9 a.m.–noon, July 30-August 2 in the Museum of the Coastal Bend
Are you ready to explore? People have been exploring and settling Texas for thousands of years. Join the Museum of the Coastal Bend and discover how people explored and settled Texas in days gone by and discover how you might explore new planets in the future.  What would you take with you to a new land?  How would you find it, and what would you do when you got there?

Explore the Magical World of Art! - $95

9 a.m.–noon, June 17-20 in the VC Continuing Education Center, Room 100
Express your creative side.  Explore the wonderful world of art in this class using various mediums and techniques including painting with color and pen, basic perspective, complimentary colors and face and expressions.  Come discover your inner artist.


Fun with Technology - $95
1-4 p.m., June 24-27 in the VC Continuing Education Center, Room 208 
Create a fun and informative presentation with PowerPoint using two of the most useful Office programs – Word and Excel.  Students will also learn the basics of Photoshop and photo-sharing websites including Instagram and Pinterest.  The importance of Internet safety will also be discussed.

Origami & Paper Quilling - $95
9 a.m.-noon, July 8 – 11 in the VC Continuing Education Center, Room 100
Students will learn an ancient and exotic art form in this engaging and inspiring camp.  Changing a boring, flat piece of paper into a 3-dimensional shape is like magic. Students will also learn the art of paper quilling, a hobby that dates back to the 18th century.

Basketball Skills Camp - $65
8-10 a.m., July 16 – 18 in the VC Sports Center 
This camp will be led by Abraham Garcia, St. Joseph High School basketball coach, who led the Flyers to an appearance at the 2011-12 TAPPS 4A Regional playoffs.  Participants will be introduced to basketball skills, basic mechanics, fundamentals, and team work.  Layups, shooting techniques, defense and structured game play will also be taught.  The camps are designed to help each participant develop their basketball potential, grow in character, and have fun.

Volleyball Skills Camp - $65
10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., July 16 – 18 in the VC Sports Center 
This camp will be led by Allyson Griffin, St. Joseph High School co-head volleyball coach, who led the Lady Flyers to the 2012-13 TAPPS 4A State Championship Game.  Participants will be introduced to fundamental skills, positions, and team play.  The camp is designed to help each participant develop their volleyball potential, grow in character, and have fun.
