Groundbreaking for Victoria College’s Emerging Technology Center is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 30.

The Center will be located on 16 acres of land in the Lone Tree II Industrial Park across from the Caterpillar hydraulic excavator manufacturing facility. The land was donated by the City of Victoria and the Victoria Sales Tax Development Corporation.

The Emerging Technology Center will prepare students for jobs in the South Texas area and will meet the training needs of business and industry. It will house specialized training labs for industrial applications, computer labs, traditional classrooms for instruction, meeting rooms, and flexible-use rooms for large-scale corporate events.

“Victoria College continues to lead the way in offering high-quality education for in-demand jobs in the Crossroads region,” said Dr. Tom Butler, Victoria College president. “The Emerging Technology Center will allow us to expand our industrial training, which will strengthen an already solid partnership with area business and industry.”

In May 2012, Victoria County voters approved a $22 million general obligation bond to support VC’s master plan, which includes construction of the Emerging Technology Center.

Also in 2012, the M.G. & Lillie A. Johnson Foundation awarded a $2.5 million grant to Victoria College. The largest part of the grant, $1.98 million, will help offset equipment costs for programs that will be housed in the Emerging Technology Center. Recently, INVISTA donated $30,000 to the Center.

The Center will offer workforce training for in-demand areas such as:
•    Industrial systems mechanic
•    Machinist
•    Oil and gas technicians
•    Logistics and operations management

It will be approximately 112,000 square feet and consist of two structures – an Industrial Training Building and Conference & Classroom Building – connected by a second-floor walkway.

The facility is expected to be in operation in spring 2015.
