New Victoria College Board of Trustees member John Villafranca, center, was sworn in by Jennifer Yancey, left, VC vice president of College Advancement & External Affairs; and welcomed by VC President Dr. Tom Butler, right.
John A. Villafranca, DeTar Healthcare System director of Outpatient Business Development, was recently sworn in as a member of the Victoria College Board of Trustees. He replaces longtime trustee Thomas O’Connor, who resigned Sept. 19 after serving 48 years on the board.

“I’ve always been very active in the community and served on other boards,” Villafranca said. “I have also worked with (board of trustees member) Robby Burdge and several others on several other boards. I’m very impressed with what past and present board members have done in regards to Victoria College’s quality of education and the affordability of it.”

He said he was flattered to be asked to become a member the board and wants to continue serving Victoria County and ensure Victoria College’s quality of education continues.

Villafranca has an extensive work history creating, developing and improving various hospital departments and programs at DeTar, where he was recently honored for 28 years of service.

At the hospital, he streamlines patient, physician, and clinical staff experiences and specializes in integrated healthcare delivery network operations. His previous assignments included director of radiology at DeTar, director of the School of Radiology at Citizens Medical Center, laboratory analyst at DuPont in Victoria, and director of radiology at Doctor’s Hospital in Houston.

Villafranca has served on the Pastoral Council Board of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, St. Joseph High School Board of Directors, Victoria County Jail Development Advisory Board, Nazareth Academy Advisory Board, Hope Chest Board and as chair of the Community Mother and Child Board. He is also a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Knights of Columbus,

A graduate of Bloomington High School, Villafranca earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and a Associate of Applied Science degree in radiology from the Houston School of Radiology.

His first meeting as a trustee will be on Nov. 18.
