The DeTar Volunteer Services Inc. has donated $10,000 for nursing scholarships to worthy Victoria College students.

The volunteers operate two gift shops at DeTar Navarro and DeTar North. Primarily, the profits made at both gift shops are used for charitable contributions that assist the youth of Victoria and help with refurbishing of both DeTar Hospitals, the healthcenter and various rooms in the hospitals.

The DeTar group consists of 80 senior volunteers and 15 pastoral care volunteers, which are also part of the senior volunteer group. Coordinator for the DeTar Volunteer Services is Yvette Peuttus.

“The DeTar Volunteer Services, Inc. has been a huge advocate of the nursing program at Victoria College,” said Amy Mundy, Victoria College Foundation executive director. “The scholarship donations they have made over the years have helped many students achieve their goal of a career in healthcare. They are a great group to work with and their generosity is evident, not just through monetary donations, but also by the many volunteer hours they contribute each year.”

Each year, the group provides funds for ten $1,000 nursing scholarships to Victoria College students. The college selects the student that receives the scholarship. The group also presents about five $1,000 scholarships each year to DeTar Junior Volunteers who have previously volunteered with DeTar Healthcare System for at least two years during the summer.

The DeTar Volunteers also give up to $24,000 each year to benefit the DeTar Hospitals’ Indigent Care Fund.

“Our group is committed to having outstanding nurses here in Victoria,” said Dalton Metting, DeTar Volunteer Services treasurer. “To that end, we dedicate our volunteer hours to quality education for Victoria College nursing students. It’s an investment that pays big dividends to the Crossroads area.”
