Victoria College receives ‘You Make a Difference’ award from VISD

Victoria College was recently recognized by the Victoria ISD school board with a “You Make a Difference Award.”

VC was honored for being a partner in the education of VISD students for generations. Through the years, the college has provided excellent post-secondary opportunities for VISD graduates, according to VISD Communications Director Diane Boyett.

“Partnerships and collaboration between Victoria College and Victoria ISD have been blossoming in a number of different areas lately, and the Victoria ISD board wanted to publicly show their appreciation with this award,” said Dr. Tom Butler, VC president. “We are very pleased that VISD values our partnership, and even more pleased with all that we are able to accomplish by working together.”

Citing the reason for the award, Boyett said that “in recent years, Victoria College has been working with VISD schools in making information available to our students on the opportunities that await them by attending college. College staff members help students with financial aid information and help with applications.”

“Over the last several years, we have been fortunate to offer students opportunities for dual-credit courses through Victoria College,” Boyett continued. “The partnership with Victoria College is making it possible for students in the Early College Center at Liberty Academy to graduate high school with associate degrees. Students at Victoria East and Victoria West are also able to gain many hours of college credit through dual enrollment opportunities.”

The VISD board also cited VC faculty members and administrators who have been working with VISD career and technical education staff, along with representatives of business and industry to craft new innovative courses that will help VISD students prepare to enter job professions that are in growing demand areas. These innovative courses will be offered to VISD students starting in the next school year.

“Over half of our high school graduates that enter college within a year are enrolling in community colleges, most at Victoria College,” Boyett said. “Many of our co-workers began their post-secondary educations at Victoria College. In fact, this month, Victoria College’s Career Focus magazine features Victoria East teacher Jonathan Sixtos on the cover with his story of how he took advantage of the offerings at VC.”
