Thirty-eight area high school students temporarily took off their team jerseys on Monday and joined new teams as part of the sixth annual Victoria College & Chick-fil-A All Star High School Basketball Games.

Based on team season records and stats, 49 area seniors were nominated by their respective coaches to take part in the event. Josh Moore, VC women's basketball and volleyball coach, along with other VC coaches Allison Peters and Jesse Ortega, selected the 38 players from the pool of nominees.

Athletes were assigned to a white team or maroon team, and each of the groups was led by VC coaches. Moore said the high school players spent an hour of practice prior to the games, learning to work as a team.

“These athletes are at their elite level and played a lot of basketball in high school,” Moore said. “This gives them the ability to work well with other players.”

The girls white team won 63-57 over the maroon team. The boys white team won 87-75 against the maroon team.
“This is an opportunity to highlight some local players and showcase their talents,” Moore said. “It’s gotten bigger and bigger each year.”

More than 200 people attended this year’s games.

Amanise Coleman, of Shiner, was named Most Valuable Player of the girls teams while Dravian Duncan, of Goliad, was named MVP for the boys teams.

Prior to the games, half the players went on a VC campus tour/scavenger hunt while the other half practiced, then the teams switched places.
