VC students, employees volunteer for United Way agencies

More than 35 VC students, joined by some faculty and staff, recently volunteered for community service projects at four United Way agencies around Victoria. The volunteers painted the interior of the Billy T. Cattan Recovery Center and the exterior of a YMCA building, put together food packages at the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, and cleaned the Mid-Coast Family Services Women’s Shelter. The event was held as a way for students to reciprocate the support given to VC by the community. “It’s important to encourage our student body to volunteer and support the community,” said Elaine Everett-Hensley, VC Student Center & Student Activities director. “We are very proud of all of the students, faculty and staff who gave up a Saturday to participate in this event. We plan on making this an annual event and growing in volunteer participation and the agencies we serve.” Jennifer Yancey, VC vice president of College Advancement & External Affairs, echoed that statement saying, “VC students, faculty and staff gave selflessly of themselves on this first ‘Pirates Give Back’ day. They provided valuable resources, and their time and talent to serve the Victoria community. I am so proud of them for helping the United Way partner agencies address their needs.”
