VC Choir, Chorus to sing ‘Eternal Light Requiem’

Victoria College’s Choir and the Victoria Civic Chorus will sing Howard Goodall’s “Eternal Light Requiem” with soloists and chamber orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 27 in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the door or from any Victoria Civic Chorus member. The combined choirs of over 40 voices have been performing in front of Victoria audiences for more than 50 years.

Under the direction of Dr. Marylynn Fletcher, the chorus will be accompanied by string orchestra, harp and piano. Vocal soloists are Olivia Cheesman, Eugenie Fuhrman, Adam Gonzalez, Emil E. Matula, III, Vanessa Mora, Duane Roth and Chelsey Sanders.

“Our audiences enjoy hearing large-scale choral works, such as Karl Jenkins’ ‘Stabat Mater’ and John Rutter’s ‘Magnificat,’” Fletcher said. “Like those works, ‘Eternal Light Requiem’ has hauntingly beautiful melodies and challenging rhythmic sections. This work has become an unofficial tribute to fallen soldiers of World War I.”

“Goodall’s ‘Eternal Light Requiem’ takes a different course than Requiems of earlier composers such as Verdi and Berlioz,” Fletcher explained. “Typically, a choral Requiem uses the Latin text from the Roman Catholic Church funeral Mass. Goodall intersperses texts from English poems such as ‘Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep,’ ‘Belief,’ ‘In Flanders Field’ and ‘Drop, Drop, Slow Tears.’ These texts are chosen to provide solace to those who grieve.”

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church is located at 4102 N. Ben Jordan Street in Victoria.
