VC Jazz Combo joins high school musicians in concert

Victoria College’s Jazz Combo, along with jazz ensembles from Victoria East and West High Schools, will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7 in the Victoria East High School Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

“The show will also feature a host of semi-pro and professional musicians, most of whom are also VC music alumni who are now out in the professional world of teaching or playing,” said Jonathan Anderson, director of the VC Jazz Combo.

Tunes to be performed in concert include “One Note Samba” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “Red Clay,” by Freddie Hubbard; “All of Me,” by Seymour Simons and Gerald Marks; “Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars),” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “Watermelon Man,” by Herbie Hancock; “St. Louis Blues,” by W.C. Handy; “Sax in the City,” by George Vincent; “Birdland,” arranged by John Higgins; “Cantaloupe Island,” by Herbie Hancock; “Count Bubba,” arranged by Paul Murtha; and “Vehicle,” arranged by Ralph Ford.

Victoria East and West Jazz Ensemble directors are Carlos Gonzalez and VC music alumni Joshua Partida, respectively.
