New $250,000 VC scholarship honors longtime Johnson Foundation board member

The M.G. & Lillie A. Johnson Foundation has established the Munson Smith Endowed Scholarship in the amount of $250,000 to honor Smith’s many years of service with the Johnson Foundation and communities it serves.

The annual income from the Endowment will be used to provide scholarships for students attending Victoria College.

Smith served as a member of the Johnson Foundation Board from 1988 to 2014.

“The Munson Smith Endowed Scholarship will create a lasting legacy in allowing college students the opportunity to pursue their hopes and dreams,” said Amy Mundy, Victoria College Foundation executive director.

The VC Foundation will manage and award scholarships from the endowment.

Mundy noted that the Johnson Foundation has supported scholarships, facilities, student services, faculty, equipment, technology, and program development in the amount of $8.5 million to Victoria College since 1978, with $7 million of that awarded during Smith’s term on the board.

“The Johnson Foundation has been very generous to Victoria College,” she said. “It has made a huge impact over the years.”

Betsy Crane, VC Career, Health & Technical Professions dean, echoed that statement.

“The generous scholarships provided by the Johnson Foundation allow our allied health students to make their dreams a reality, while easing their financial burden,” Crane said.

Kayla Peterson, VC student and recipient of a Foundation scholarship, expressed her gratitude for the assistance she received.

“I couldn't be more grateful for the support the Johnson Foundation has given me,” Peterson said. “The scholarship I received helped me a great deal with my finances this school year.”

Now that the Munson Smith Endowment has been established, more scholarship opportunities will be available to VC students.

Students with a 2.5 or higher GPA from the seven-county VC service area are eligible to receive the scholarship, which will first be awarded this fall.
