Victoria College’s Adult Education Center and the Victoria Literacy Council have relocated to VC’s Main Campus and are hosting an open house on Thursday, May 21 from 10 a.m.-noon and 4-6 p.m. The event will be held in the Continuing Education Center and is free and open to the public.

“We invite the community to come see us in our new location,” said Tiffany Johnson, VC’s Adult Education Center director. “We want all of our community partners who often work with our programs to know where we are located."

Adult Basic Education courses at Victoria College cover basic academic subjects to help adult students improve their skills in preparation to take the GED and reach a college-ready level. English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are also available for non-native speakers who need to become proficient enough in English to pass state and citizenship exams and continue with their education.

The center, formerly located at 802 E. Crestwood Dr., also offers the Students Accelerating through Integrated Learning (SAIL) Program which combines Adult Basic Education with skills training in nurse aide, electrical, truck driving, and welding.

“I believe we will be very accessible to the community in this location,” Johnson said. “Our students will have access to many more resources on the Main Campus.”

The Victoria Literacy Council staff and volunteer tutors give adults a chance to improve their reading and English speaking skills, as well as help those adults who need to pass a test for job training, employment or advancing in their job. Trained staff also work with those who have literacy difficulties because of learning or reading disabilities.

The new location houses four Adult Education classrooms and eight offices. Johnson said the center’s services and classes will continue during the open house.

Guided tours will be offered and light refreshments will be served during the come-and-go event.

The Victoria Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Continuing Education Center Building.

The Continuing Education Center is located on Ben Jordan St. on VC’s Main Campus.
