Student Nurses Association, geology instructor receive awards

Victoria College’s Associate Degree Nursing-Student Nurses Association was recently named the Club/Organization of the Year. The 105-member organization was recognized for its work raising funds for student scholarships, giving foot exams and blood pressure checks during a Diabetes Expo, and helping to build two new houses for Habitat for Humanity. Club members also volunteered at the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent and served over 600 plates of food at Sunrise Rotary Club’s annual barbecue event. “They do so many good things for our community and for Victoria College,” said Debbie Pena, the organization’s faculty advisor. “They want to help in any way they can.’ Additionally, Matthew Weiler, VC geology instructor, was named Advisor of the Year for his work with VC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges. “Mr. Weiler has gone above and beyond what has been required within the organization as an advisor and supporter,” said student John Pearce. “His encouragement and steadfast guidance bettered all involved members as it served as a great learning experience personally, professionally and academically.” The Student Activities Office annually recognizes the dedication of student club/organization clubs and advisors, and the honors are voted on by a VC Student Activity Awards Committee composed of faculty and staff.
