Departments get boost from VC Foundation faculty, staff grants

The Workforce & Continuing Education Department faculty and staff grant award.

Victoria College students will reap the benefits of the VC Foundation’s 2015 faculty and staff grants, which were given to 10 departments spanning the spectrum of VC’s programs and services.

“The VC Foundation recently awarded $22,500 in grants to 10 well-deserving VC programs and departments,” said Amy Mundy, VC Foundation executive director. “From equipment supporting VC science courses to the Workforce & Continuing Education’s request of a motorcycle, the faculty and staff grants are among the many resources that the VC Foundation utilizes to enhance programs and opportunities for VC students.”

Over the past 16 years, the VC Foundation has awarded grants to faculty and staff totaling $312,500.

The recipients of the 2015 VC Faculty and Staff Grants are:

The Workforce & Continuing Education Department received $4,650 for the purchase of a 2015 Honda Rebel CMX 250 motorcycle to be used in the Motorcycle Operator Training Course. Victoria College is the only provider of this training in the Crossroads region. The Respiratory Care Program was awarded $3,145 for the purchase of a Spirometer to teach the spirometry (lung function) test. This equipment will give students the appropriate laboratory experience and competency evaluation to properly perform the test upon graduation. The Division of Science, Mathematics & Physical Education was awarded $2,997 to purchase Surface Pro3 tablets and accessories to create a learning-centered, highly engaged lecture environment. This equipment will allow students to look at everything written during a lecture with the option of watching the recorded lecture. The Division of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences was awarded $2,806 for the purchase of a new kiln. Students will use the kiln to fire a substantial number of pottery projects, and to complete the Empty Bowls preparation on schedule. The Visual Arts Program received $1,882 to equip the recently renovated studio space in the Fine Arts Building with drawing tables to better serve the needs of advanced painting and drawing students. The VC Gonzales Center was awarded $1,357 to support science courses benefitting students entering the Vocational Nursing Program, the Associate Degree Nursing Program and other allied health programs. The VC/UHV Library received $1,277 for travel expenses to the American Library Association 2015 Annual Conference in San Francisco. This conference will assist Laurie Neuerburg in her role as instruction and media librarian in improving methodology for student instruction sessions and assisting students with research. The Emergency Medical Services Program was given $1,085 for equipment needed to complete the conversion of the Emergency Medical Technician lecture/skills room to a skills lab. Advising & Counseling Services received $800 to fund VC’s Lookout Program. This program will provide an effective and efficient means of preventing suicide, violence, substance abuse and trauma while striving to promote wellness for the VC community.
