Victoria College enhances new freshman experience with Freshman Family Day

An evening of food, music and fun has been added to the new freshman experience for students planning to attend Victoria College for the first time this fall.

New VC freshmen and their families will have an opportunity to connect with faculty, staff and other students at Freshman Family Day from 5-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 9. The event will give new students’ family members an up-close look at Victoria College and help them discover how they can support their college student.

Freshman Family Day will include an entertaining talk by motivational speaker Gabe Salazar; a question-and-answer session for students and families; and a party in the quad featuring Clay Crockett and The Shotgun Riders. The event will begin with sign-in at 5 p.m. in the VC Sports Center gym. New freshmen who attend will receive a free Victoria College t-shirt.

College administrators added Freshman Family Day to the mandatory Pirate Orientation this year as another way to help freshmen transition into college life and become successful students and graduates.

“Pirate Orientation is evolving as we strive to enrich the new freshman experience,” said Bobby Cubriel, director of Advising & Counseling Services. “Our main goal is to begin building connections between students and the campus, and Freshman Family Day allows us to do this in a laid-back setting while showcasing the fun side of college.”

New VC freshmen are required to attend one of five Pirate Orientation sessions this summer. During Pirate Orientation, students will create a degree plan, plan their class schedule, and register for fall classes. They will also learn about their expectations as a college student as well as the programs and services VC offers to help them succeed.

Pirate Orientation sessions are currently scheduled for the following dates:

  • Tuesday, July 14
  • Monday, July 27
  • Tuesday, July 28
  • Monday, Aug. 10
  • Tuesday, Aug. 11

Each Pirate Orientation session will be held from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on VC’s Main Campus. Slots are limited are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up for Pirate Orientation and Freshman Family Day, visit
