SAIL program offers free training to adults without diploma, skills

For those without a high school diploma, GED or training and who are wondering what to do next, Victoria College can help them set SAIL and chart a course for their lives.

Two information sessions on Victoria College’s Students Accelerating through Integrated Learning (SAIL) program will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 15 and from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, July 18 in VC’s Calhoun County Center’s auditorium. Both sessions are free and open to the public.

VC’s Adult Education Center also offers free SAIL information sessions every Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Continuing Education Center on the VC Main Campus, 2200 E. Red River St. in Victoria.

Students in the SAIL program can receive technical training combined with reading, writing, math and English language skills needed to enter a career as a nurse aide, electrician or welder.

These are free, noncredit courses – they do not apply toward a credit degree, credit certificate, or academic transfer – but graduates are eligible to apply for a job in the field in which they trained. Additionally, graduates of the nurse aide training are ready to take the Texas Nurse Aide Registry Exam, and graduates of the electrician and welding training can take the NCCER test.

SAIL training is funded in part by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Accelerate TEXAS initiative in response to the growing demand for adult basic education services.

"Within one year, Accelerate TEXAS helped me get from zero job prospects to a college education and a family-supporting career,” said SAIL graduate Lacey Bowman, who received welding training. “It created pathways for me that I didn’t even know were possible.”

Students who want to enroll in SAIL must meet the following criteria:

  • Be below a 12.9 grade level in reading, language or math on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be eligible to work in Texas
  • Complete the Launch Class

VC’s Calhoun County Center is located at 900 N. Virginia St. in Port Lavaca.
