Dr. David Hinds named Victoria College president

Dr. David Hinds has been selected as the fifth president of Victoria College by the VC Board of Trustees. Hinds will take over as president in August from Dr. Tom Butler, who is retiring after leading VC since 2008.

"I am humbled and excited to have been named the next president of Victoria College,” Hinds said. “My wife, Kim, and I are both from Texas and can't wait to get back home. I'm looking forward to getting to know the employees of VC and community members as we work together to benefit our students.”

Ron Walker, chair of the VC Board of Trustees, said the board is confident in the leadership the new president will provide to Victoria College and the region.

"He brings a strong academic background and understanding of the changing needs of workforce training,” Walker said. “Dr. Hinds will strive to continue Victoria College’s mission of providing quality education at an affordable price for students and the community.”

In his current position as senior vice president of instructional affairs at Allegany College in Maryland, Hinds provides leadership and direction to Allegany College’s career and transfer programs as well as student academic services. He also served as the president of the Maryland Council of Community College Chief Academic Officers.

Prior to his current position at Allegany, Hinds served as the division chair for Business, Computer Technology, and Human Services for 11 years as well as a faculty member for Business and Computer Technology for 22 years at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Working full time through each of his higher education degrees, Hinds earned his PhD from The University of Texas at Austin in Higher Education Administration (Community College Leadership); his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston; and his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas State University.

His career in education began in 1986 as a computer science teacher at San Marcos High School. Two years later, he moved to the public sector working as a business analyst at Electronic Data Systems in Plano. In 1990, he began his work in higher education at Brazosport College, where he served as faculty member and division chair. He also served as intern to the chancellor at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas, during his doctoral studies with the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin.

Hinds was one of three finalists presented to the board for consideration by VC’s Presidential Search Committee. Other finalists were Dr. Patrick Vaughn, vice president for academic affairs at St. Louis Community College’s Wildwood Campus, and Dr. Colleen Smith, district senior vice president of academic affairs and student development at Collin College.

VC board members had unanimously voted to extend an offer to Hinds and named him as sole finalist at a special meeting on June 15.
