VC introduces new marketable skills certificates

New “building blocks” to assist students in landing a job have been added to Victoria College’s degree and certificate offerings. This fall, VC will offer seven marketable skills certificates allowing students to earn a credential in one or two semesters.

“A marketable skills certificate is awarded to students who complete a cluster of courses along the way toward their long-term goals,” said Bobby Cubriel, VC's Advising & Counseling Services director. “Instead of students getting a credential in two years, now they can earn a credential sooner, which keeps them motivated. It’s a building block that students can collect along the way toward their associate degree or certificate.”

Victoria College will offer four marketable skills certificates that can be completed in one semester, including Business Relationship Building, IT Support Specialist, Local Area Network Administration and Office Support Staff. Marketable skills certificates that can be completed in two semesters include Accounting Technician, CISCO Local Area Network Technology and Welding. Each semester typically includes three classes.

"It’s a win-win situation for today’s students,” explained Cubriel. “For example, a student who is interested in business management can complete three accounting classes in one semester and walk away with a credential and the skills needed to get a job sooner. At the same time, she will have earned credits toward the Associate of Applied Science degree in business management, bringing her a few steps closer to her goal.”

Students interested in earning a marketable skills certificate will need to complete VC's admissions steps for credit courses, but the requirement to take the Texas Success Initiative Assessment is waived for students only seeking a marketable skills certificate.

Registration for Fall 2015 credit courses is going on now through Aug. 21, with fall classes beginning Aug. 24. New freshmen are required to sign up for a Pirate Orientation session at VictoriaCollege.edu/PirateOrientation and will register for classes during the session they attend.
