Victoria College staff have been busy this summer renovating new lab space at the Liberty Street Industrial Training Center in preparation for Plumbing 1, a new course that will be offered this fall.

Registration is currently underway for the course, which begins this month. The class will meet 6-10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 21-Dec. 16.

Students will be given an introduction to the plumbing trade and plumbing profession, plumbing math and drawings, and fixtures and faucets. Students will also learn about safety, tools and plastic, copper, cast iron and carbon steel pipe and fittings. Drain-Waste-Vent systems and water distribution systems will also be covered.

Scott D. Bentson, a VC adjunct instructor and Victoria Air Conditioning LTD employee, explained that plumbing is not just about dripping or clogged pipes.

“Plumbing is an essential part of any healthy society,” Bentson said. “Plumbers are tasked to keep the infrastructure of a critical and complex system operating safely. These skills take specialized training and years to hone. A career choice in the plumbing industry offers more than familiarity with a shovel or a sewer snake. There are many rewarding paths that can be taken along the way to your desired goals.”

In the Golden Crescent area, plumbers earn an average of $18.84 an hour, or $39,000 a year, and can make as much as $57,000 annually, according to Career Coach.

Plumbing Level I is a noncredit course that does not apply toward a credit degree, credit certificate or academic transfer, but successful completion of the 96-contact-hour course will lead to a nationally recognized certificate by NCCER.

VC’s Liberty Street Industrial Training Center is located at 1404 N. Liberty St. in Victoria.
