VC celebrates Accelerate TEXAS Week, salutes efforts to help ABE students succeed in college

Victoria College is one of over 23 community colleges across Texas celebrating Accelerate TEXAS Week in honor of the initiative that has already helped more than 5,000 Adult Basic Education students on their way toward college credentials.

As part of the week’s activities, Victoria College will host a reception and information session on Wednesday, Nov. 11 so the community can learn more about the statewide initiative. The event will be held in the Continuing Education Center on VC’s Main Campus, 2200 E. Red River St. The reception will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Room 103, followed by the information session at 9 a.m. in Room 110.

Victoria College was one of five community colleges that participated in a collaborative Accelerate TEXAS grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in 2012 to help transition adult education students into postsecondary education.

Based on the success of VC’s Students Accelerating through Integrated Learning program launched in 2013, the THECB recently awarded VC a contract to serve as a mentor to McLennan Community College and Blinn College. Each institution will develop and refine its own Accelerate TEXAS model, while Victoria College will continue to offer its SAIL program.

Accelerate TEXAS addresses a critical workforce issue: At least 60 percent of Texas jobs will require a career certificate or college degree by 2020, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. In addition, an estimated 40 percent of Texans over age 25 have never been to college, let alone earned a credential.

Accelerate TEXAS programs integrate Adult Basic Education skills into workforce training programs so that students gain the skills and certificates they need to apply for high-demand jobs. Participating colleges use real-time labor market data and other information to determine what credentials hold the most value for students. Most Accelerate TEXAS students are pursuing credentials in healthcare, manufacturing, construction and transportation fields.
