Victoria College and the Victoria Symphony Society will present its first Crossroads Strings Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7 in the Victoria East High School Auditorium, 4103 E. Mockingbird Drive. The concert is free and open to the public.

Crossroads Strings is a newly formed orchestra for adults and advanced young string players.

Formed as an educational outreach of the Victoria Symphony in collaboration with Victoria College, the string ensemble currently has about 15 members, including seven VC students. The orchestra rehearses weekly at Victoria College, and members enrolled at VC earn college credit for participation in the ensemble.

Debbie Durham, Victoria Symphony’s director of education, explained why she’s excited about Crossroads Strings.

“While the Victoria Symphony began as a community orchestra forty-two years ago, this is the first formation of a string ensemble open to experienced Crossroads players of all ages since the 1970s,” said Durham. “It is both our first collaboration with Victoria College to create an ongoing performing orchestra and the first orchestra class in Victoria College history.”

Durham said the Victoria Symphony has hired section coaches from Corpus Christi, Austin and Houston to work regularly with each string section, including violins, viola, cello and bass.

“We encourage all experienced string players to join us in January 2016,” said Durham. “We hope any interested folks will come to the concert and decide it is worth the commitment of Monday evenings to play their string instrument again and perform with an orchestra.”

David Platt, the group’s music director and instructor, also serves as co-director of the University Orchestra at the University of Texas at Austin.

“Don’t miss this exciting new string orchestra compiled of musicians from the greater Crossroads community, local high schools and Victoria College,” said Platt.

Concert attendees will be able to enjoy a variety of musical styles from the Baroque to the Modern era including works by Mozart, Bach, Holst, Elgar and Riley.
