Winter Break is ‘perfect time’ to apply for VC scholarships

The scholarship application is open for Victoria College students seeking scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year. Some scholarships have priority deadlines as early as April.

“The downtime during the Winter Break is the perfect time to submit scholarship applications before the busy spring semester starts,” said Amy Mundy, executive director of the VC Foundation. “Students seem to like the fact that they can submit just one application and be considered for a variety of scholarships.”

When students apply through the VC Foundation scholarship application in the Pirate Portal, their application is used to match criteria for over 100 different scholarships.

"In addition to the traditional scholarships awarded to students enrolling in programs that lead to a degree or certificate, the VC Foundation now offers scholarships to students seeking a credential through our Workforce & Continuing Education Department,” said Mundy. “Students have been awarded scholarships for training to become nurse aides, phlebotomists, HVAC technicians, electricians, truck drivers and other good-paying careers.”

Workforce & Continuing Education scholarships are offered throughout the year, and the deadline to apply is five business days prior to the first day of class.

The online application for the Workforce & Continuing Education scholarship and other situation-specific scholarships is available at VictoriaCollege.edu/Scholarships. Other situation-specific scholarships include VISD Dual Credit, Gonzales Center, Victoria College Transfer Student and “What’s Your Story?” scholarships.

VC's streamlined scholarship process helps students avoid having to print applications from different webpages or visit campus to obtain a paper form. Once a student applies online, the scholarship application is sent directly to the appropriate approving authority.

The VC Foundation awarded more than $720,000 in scholarships during the 2014-15 school year.

While the VC Foundation awards scholarships from private funding, Mundy recommends that students first check with VC’s Financial Aid Office to see if they are eligible for state or federal aid.
