Guests can ‘fire a cannon’ at museum’s Hands-On History event
Hands-On History

The Museum of the Coastal Bend will host a Hands-On History event 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, giving visitors an opportunity to try out tools from the past.

The museum has lariats for roping and atlatls for throwing spears. Visitors can also go through the process of loading and “firing” a cannon.

“There are lots of small steps that are done very quickly in an artillery shot,” said Isabel Ray, the museum’s curator of education. “Although we can’t fire the real cannons in the center of the museum—I would get fired for that!—it’s fun to go through the steps with our fiberglass version.”

The Museum of the Coastal Bend is located on the corner of Red River and Ben Jordan streets on Victoria College’s Main Campus in Victoria. Regular museum hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and admission is pay-what-you-want.
