VC launches wellness initiative, wants ‘no excuses’

Victoria College is helping faculty, staff and physical education students start off the new year on the right foot with the launch of a new health and wellness initiative. Participants are challenged to have “no excuses” when it comes to working out and staying healthy.

The initiative was initially created to motivate employees to work out and live a healthier lifestyle.

“Generally speaking, companies have found that healthier employees are more productive employees,” said Josh Moore, VC’s intramural/extramural specialist.

A point-based system allows participants to earn points by attending free VC wellness classes including yoga, Zumba, body pump, kickboxing and video workouts. They can also earn points by utilizing the VC Sports Center weight room or by simply walking a mile on campus.

“Wellness Wednesdays are also a fun and educational avenue for employees to earn point,” said Moore. “Each Wednesday a new topic will be covered, such as fitness assessments or blood pressure screening and education.”

Points can be redeemed for “no excuses” T-shirts, water bottles, massages and more. Fifty points will earn participants a coveted ticket to the end-of-the-year healthy cook-off celebration in May.

The health and wellness initiative has also been extended to members of VC’s sports club as well as students enrolled in physical education classes.

In addition to the new initiative, VC has several ways of promoting healthy lifestyles among its students. When classes are not in session, the VC Sports Center is available for students to work out in the weight room, play ping pong, exercise in the aerobics room, or check out sports equipment. Students can also participate in the Cross Campus Challenge: Battle for the Cup, a friendly intramural sports competition between VC and UHV students.

During the spring semester, the Sports Center is open to VC students 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Fridays.
