Third- and fourth-year TexPREP students traveled to Texas A&M University in College Station to tour the campus and explore STEM academic opportunities.

Victoria College will host a TexPREP informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1 at the Johnson Symposium in VC’s Allied Health Building. Parents of junior high students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers are encouraged to attend and learn about the summer program that will take place on the VC campus June 13-July 28.

“TexPREP offers the opportunity for students to engage in hands-on activities and a challenging academic program that will motivate and prepare them for STEM careers,” said Sabrina Romo, VC’s Pre-College Programs & Recruitment coordinator.

TexPREP is a mathematics-based, academic enrichment program that emphasizes the development of abstract reasoning and problem-solving skills. The sessions are presented over the course of four summers and include coursework, team projects, class presentations, exams, career awareness speakers, field trips and special events.

Credit may be earned upon successful completion to apply to a student’s high school.

Students who complete the sixth grade by summer 2016 and are interested in STEM careers are eligible to apply for the TexPREP program. Students who have successfully completed the first, second or third year of the program are automatically eligible to apply for the second, third or fourth year, respectively.

There are no tuition and fees associated with the program, but participants are responsible for lunch and transportation to and from the program. Calhoun County ISD students interested in attending the program will have transportation provided by CCISD-Partners in Education.

All TexPREP activities, except for field trips, will be held in the Technology Center on VC’s Main Campus, and students will meet Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The deadline to apply is Thursday, March 31.
