Victoria College took the lead in showcasing Career and Technical Education to Texas students at the 2016 SXSWedu Expo on Tuesday, March 8 at the Austin Convention Center. The SXSWedu Expo attracts thousands of Central Texas students, parents and educators each year and is designed to encourage learners of all ages to identify and reach their education and career goals.

Shannon Swor, Victoria College’s marketing grant specialist for the statewide TEXASgenuine initiative, and other TEXASgenuine partners invited attendees to “picture yourself in a TEXASgenuine career.” Students took selfies in front of an interchangeable backdrop representing various career options.

“We saw a large number of diverse Texas middle school and high school students along with secondary educators and advisors,” said Swor. “This was an international event, but the majority of the people we saw were in our target audience—Texans.”

The TEXASgenuine initiative is a statewide collaboration focused on broadcasting the positive outcomes of Career & Technical Education—real-world training that equips student with the skills they need to excel in a career. A key component of the project is, a free career exploration website for Texans. The website’s free career assessment helps students identify their top 3 Career Clusters®. Students can also use the website to explore CTE programs offered at all public community and technical colleges in Texas.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board awarded Victoria College a Perkins State Leadership grant to sustain the TEXASgenuine initiative in collaboration with the Texas Association of Community College Marketers, the THECB, the Texas Education Agency, and the 50+ public community and technical colleges in Texas.
