Choirs sing music from operas and pictures

Music from operas and pictures – think Jeanette MacDonald and Eddie Nelson movies. They were America’s sweethearts and the stars of classic movies from the 1930s. Musicals such as The Desert Song and The Student Prince by Sigmund Romberg were a smashing success.

These and other songs will be sung by the Victoria College Choirs and the Victoria Civic Chorus at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8 in the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts, 214 N. Main St. in downtown Victoria. The concert is free and open to the public.

In addition to medleys of Romberg musicals, the choruses will sing a medley from Fiddler on the Roof and a medley of songs from the musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber including Phantom of the Opera and Cats. From the late 19th century, they will sing the Bell Chorus from the opera Pagliacci and the Humming Chorus from Madame Butterfly.
