Music ensembles join forces to create 'powerful experience'

The civic bands and choirs of Victoria will combine with Victoria College ensembles in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26. The Crossroads Community Band, Victoria College Band, Victoria College Choirs and Victoria Civic Chorus will perform at the Victoria Fine Arts Center, 1002 Sam Houston Dr. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Crossroads Community Band and Victoria College Band conducted by Ken Peach along with guest conductor Chad Hall will perform works by Hazo, Swearingen and Mussorgsky. The Victoria College Choraliers and Choir conducted by Dr. Marylynn Fletcher will perform several works, and the Victoria Civic Chorus will perform two songs by Randall Thompson that are settings of poems by Robert Frost.

The concert ends with all groups combined for the performance of two compositions, a lighter one and a more dramatic one. The lighter work is a collection of songs from musicals and operettas by Sigmund Romberg. The dramatic work is “The Awakening” by Joseph M. Martin.  The text addresses the story that music brightens our lives and we should awake to the sound of music.

“I wanted to perform ‘The Awakening’ combining the choir and band because it has a powerful message and is a wonderful, exciting composition,” said Peach. “When large ensembles join forces, they create a more powerful experience for both the listener and the audience.”
