Victoria College offers May music medley

Victoria College will offer two musical concerts in May. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

The first is the Crossroads Strings concert in collaboration with the Victoria Symphony Society at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30 in the Johnson Symposium on VC’s Main Campus.

Crossroads Strings is compiled of musicians from the greater Crossroads community, local high schools and Victoria College. It is an orchestra for adults and advanced young string players.

Concert attendees will hear a variety of string orchestra music.

The second concert will feature Victoria College’s Jazz Combo along with jazz ensembles from Victoria East and Victoria West high schools and Victoria Alumni. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 6 at the Victoria West High School Auditorium, 307 Tropical Dr.

“We are honored to have several Victoria ISD and Victoria College alumni who are currently out playing and teaching professionally come back to grace our stage one more time,” said Jonathan Anderson, chair of VC’s Fine Arts Department and director of the VC Jazz Combo.

Music to be performed will include:

  • “MacArthur Park” arranged by Airclone 
  • “Tiger of San Pedro” by John La Barbera
  • “Twice is Nice” by Rick Stitzel
  • “A Mis Abuelos” by Arturo Sandoval, arranged by Mossman
  • “Shadow of Your Smile” by Johnny Mandel, arranged by Wolpe
  • “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder, arranged by Victor Wooten
  • “A Taste Of Honey” by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow, arranged by Herb Alpert

Victoria East and West Jazz Ensemble directors are Carlos Gonzalez and VC music alumnus Joshua Partida, respectively.
