Victoria College student lab assistant Matthew Ramirez recently presented a poster titled “Evaluating Germicidal Effectiveness of Personal UV Products” during the spring meeting of the Texas Branch of the American Society of Microbiology. Ramirez accompanied Dr. Bill Coons, Science Department chair and professor, and Corey Sturm, biology instructor, to the April meeting which was held at the T Bar M Resort and Conference Center in New Braunfels.

“ASM’s poster initiative gives students wonderful exposure of science,” said Coons. “Our lab technician provided some prep help, and I gave Matthew some advice on experimental protocol, but he did nearly all the preparations and design himself.”

Ramirez, a 2014 graduate of Victoria West High School, plans to transfer next fall to the University of Texas at San Antonio to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree and continue research in the field of microbiology.

After attending last year’s ASM spring meeting, he knew he wanted to present a poster at this year’s conference.

“I was excited to be able to compete with other students while representing Victoria College in a field I love,” said Ramirez. “The whole process was a great experience for me. I have progressed in my way of thinking and communicating in a scientific environment, befriended many different people interested in my desired field, and added an interesting accomplishment to my résumé.”
