Victoria College offers genealogy classes

Community members interested in tracing family history are invited to register for one of two levels of genealogical research classes offered by Victoria College during the month of July. The tuition for each class is $95, and both will be held at VC’s Emerging Technology Complex, 7403 Lone Tree Rd.

Beginning genealogy classes are scheduled for four Tuesday evenings, July 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 6-8 p.m. Topics include basics for recording information, source retrieval and proper source documentation. Class instruction includes handouts, published genealogy sources, websites, methods for accessing and recording Census records, vital record sources, military records and instruction for continued research.

Advanced genealogy classes will meet Thursday evenings, July 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 6-8 p.m. Advanced genealogy researchers will learn methods for reconstructing and platting State Metes and Bounds land records that prove useful in family history and separating ancestors with the same surname. Participants will also learn how to plat and use Federal land records and their importance in family history research. Suggestion and assignments for composing family histories will intertwine all class sessions.

Dr. Martha Everman Jones, a retired Victoria College instructor, will teach both classes. Jones is a member of five national genealogical and historical societies and is a charter member of the Victoria County Genealogical Society.

The final course day for both the beginning and advanced genealogy classes will be held in the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research in Houston for an all-day, on-site learning research trip on Friday, July 29. The day-long trip will give participants an opportunity to research new genealogy records and supply their knowledge with migration maps, a treasure of genealogy books and published family histories. Students will be able to apply their newly learned skills for locating and recording family history with guided assistance.

All participants will receive a certificate of completion from Victoria College.
